Apple has expanded its Apple self-service repair programme to include M1-powered MacBook Air and Pro models. As part of the programme, users can access genuine Apple parts and tools, as well as manuals, via the Apple Self Service Repair Store, saving them the trouble of visiting stores or hiring third-party engineers. The self-service repair for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, according to the company, offers more than a dozen different repair types for each model, including the display, top case with battery, and trackpad. This scheme will eventually cover more areas of laptops.
Apple announced the news in a blog post, and the programme launched on August 23. Customers who are familiar with the complexities of repairing electronic devices will be able to complete repairs on these Mac notebooks, as they will have access to many of the same parts and tools as Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers.
To begin the self-repair process, a customer will first visit the Apple Support website and review the repair manual for the product they wish to repair. Users can then go to the Apple Self Service Repair Store and order the necessary parts and tools. Interestingly, Apple will credit users for returning damaged parts for refurbishment. As part of Apple's sustainability goals, these repaired parts will be used in future products.
Apple says it will offer rental kits for $49, so that customers who do not want to buy tools for a single repair can still use these professional repair tools. Customers will have one week to use the tool kit, which will be shipped free of charge.
Is Apple self-repair service available in India?
Apple launched the self-repair service for the iPhone 12 and 13 smartphones earlier this year. The programme is currently available to customers in the United States and will be expanded to other countries later this year.
Similarly, the self-repair service for M1-powered Macs is only available to customers in the United States. Details for Mac and iPhone self-repair in India are still unknown. It may take some time to arrive in India because Apple has yet to open an official store in the country.
