iPhone 14 Pro: Rumors It Will Now Pack 48MP Sensor

The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to have an improved main camera is one of the advantages over both the regular model and previous models. According to rumours, it will now include a 48MP sensor, the first megapixel upgrade since the iPhone 6S in 2015.

However, as the Pixel series has consistently demonstrated, more megapixels do not always imply better picture quality, and a leaker has suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro's new camera may underwhelm in low-light conditions when compared to its predecessor.

This is according to @LeaksApplePro, who has a good track record of predicting Apple's moves. He's talking about a source's hands-on time with the pre-release iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max handsets, so the findings should be taken with a grain of salt given they're twice removed.

All the same, the first impressions considered are totally worth a look.

"There are some problems with the camera system," writes the leaker. "The new 48MP sensor is 'the best in a smartphone when there is enough light', but there are some optimizations to be done with regards to Night Mode.

"According to sources, it performs worse than the 13 Pro in that category." There's a lot of background noise."

As previously stated, camera performance isn't solely determined by raw hardware specifications, which is fortunate because those will have been finalised by now. Much of it is due to the'secret sauce' added on the software side of things, so these flaws — if they are legitimate — can still be addressed.

"I'm concerned about low-light photos, but I'm confident Apple can address that before launch," @LeaksApplePro concluded.

Almost everything else has been improved, as one would expect from a generational upgrade. In addition to best-in-class photography in good lighting, the source claims that the speakers have "more base [sic] and overall clearer audio," as well as what appears to be significantly improved battery life.

"Source isn't 100% sure about this, but battery life on the 14 Pro appears to be increasing by a couple hours," the leaker writes. "There wasn't enough time to properly test this, but that was the impression of my source."

In terms of design, "the Pro Max feels like a brick (as usual)," and the camera system on the Pro handsets is noticeably larger. "If you have a MagSafe Duo, good luck," the leaker says. "It'll probably work, but it'll look awful."

What about the replacement notch? As with the notch, "you forget it's there after a few minutes of using the iPhone." It adds nothing and appears to exist solely to further distinguish the Pro model, much like an ostentatious designer label.

That being said, we all know what happened when the notch debuted on the iPhone X: a slew of premium Android handsets from Huawei, Google, and LG all debuted with their own notch. So it wouldn't be surprising if Android competitors adopted something similar to this strange, new design as their own premium calling card.

It bears repeating that these insights may be untrustworthy or even completely fictitious. But we won't have to wait long to find out: the iPhone 14 series, along with the Apple Watch 8, is set to be unveiled early next month. With a reported initial order of 90 million units, Apple appears confident that it will be another hit, but our full verdict will be available in September.
