CES 2022: Withings launches Body Scan

The Consumer Electronics Show 2022 is set to begin January 5 in Las Vegas. French company Withings has released the most technologically advanced connected scale ever, the Body Scan. The body scan is accurate to within 0.1 lb (50 g), or twice as much as the previous model. It uses multi frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure whole body fat and water percentages, visceral fat, muscle and bone mass, and extra cellular and intracellular water. It can also provide readings for individual body parts, including your torso, arms, and legs. All of this allows you to find things like dangerous localized fat or muscle imbalances used by health experts and sports professionals, Withings said.

The technology works like current fat sensing scales, measuring the resistance to a tiny detectable electric current sent through the body from the base of the scale. While generally accurate, there is a significant margin of error in using a single entry point for this stream. Adding more makes the technique far more precise. Working with a French company called Impeto Medical, Withings also developed a feature to assess nerve activity. Measurement of sweat glands in the feet allows the body to track small nerve activity, giving you a pseudo motor reading.

All sensors also provide some of the more traditional biometric data, including heart rate, 6-lead ECG recording to detect arrhythmias, and vascular age (arterial health) measurement. Withings claims that the body scan algorithm can detect heart rhythm patterns associated with atrial fibrillation. Withings will also include a three-month subscription to its health and wellness services. Data from the scale is sent to a medical professional, who will create a personalized coaching and wellness plan based on this data, Withings says.

It will also offer personalized health plans, videos and more covering topics such as nutrition, sleep, exercise and stress management to help users with their health goals. Withings said it created the body scan "as users are demanding more and more medical and health data and information." Although the design and construction of the high-strength tempered glass is similar to the previous Body Cardio, it is loaded with additional sensors.

The Body Scan includes a 3.2-inch color display where you can see most of these results, but the device also connects to the Withings app on iOS or Android where you can view it in detail. Body Scan is subject to FDA and CE approval. So Withings says it plans to launch the body scan in the second half of 2022 for $279 (about Rs 21,000), all depending on how quickly the company can move the regulator.
