BlackBerry bids goodbye, phones to stop working from today

If you've got a Blackberry phone, it's time for you to give your phone the right send as Blackberry will officially stop working today. The phones that made the qwerty keypad popular will no longer work. You might consider the phone old today but don't expect your Blackberry phone to call or send SMS to your friends.

BlackBerry noted in a blog post that legacy services for BlackBerry phones will stop working in January. The company said legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions will no longer be available after January 4, 2022. Devices running these legacy services and software will be available from the carrier or through the WiFi connections will no longer work, including data, phone calls, SMS and emergency numbers.

However, BlackBerry phones running Android OS will continue to function. "BlackBerry Android devices will not be affected by Infrastructure Services EOL unless they receive a redirect email sent to a BlackBerry hosted email address, or are assigned an Enhanced SIM Based License (ESBL) or Identity Based License (IBL). As of the EOL date, BlackBerry users will need to switch to an email address or users who use email redirection to these addresses will need to switch to a new email address if BlackBerry has an Android device, including iOS or Android device. If an ESBL or IBL license is assigned, the Customer will be required to obtain a standard license to cover their use of BlackBerry Enterprise Services with that device," the blog states.

In a blog published in September 2020, John Chen, executive chairman and CEO of BlackBerry, announced that the company had transitioned into a software company. The blog mentions that the termination of services will also affect email addresses hosted by BlackBerry, including BlackBerry Link, BlackBerry Desktop Manager, BlackBerry Blend, BlackBerry Protect.

If you are concerned about the data stored in your BlackBerry phone, the company states that the company retains personal information only as long as it is necessary to serve the identified purposes of the BlackBerry. When the information is no longer necessary or relevant, BlackBerry will delete, destroy, erase, or anonymized the User data. You can also send an urgent request to the Company to delete the data at privacyoffice@blackberry.com.
