Sony working on new PS5 model with detachable disc drive

Despite several major supply chain issues during launch and the months since, Sony PS5 has been a huge success. Sony has made incremental changes to the console over time in the form of newer models that weigh significantly less than the models at launch, but it appears that a major change to the console design is on the way.

According to Insider Gaming Tom Henderson, Sony may be looking to improve on the PS5 console design and release a model with a detachable disc drive. According to the report, design plans include a detachable disc drive that can be connected to the console via the USB-C port on the back.

Sony PS5 console refresh strategy may differ significantly from previous plans

PlayStation 5

Sony has traditionally released new variants of their new console hardware 3-4 years after launch. This would imply that new PS5 console variants could be released in the coming years.

Instead of the standard "Pro" or "Slim" models, Sony's idea of a refresh could include a console with a detachable optical drive. This could solve a lot of problems for both Sony and the players because it has the potential to lower manufacturing costs, and players who are sceptical of digital games could effectively buy a cheaper console and an optical drive separately.

It will be interesting to see if third-party external optical drives will be compatible with the console, or if Sony will sell these separately. If this is true, Sony has come up with an extremely bold idea that has the potential to significantly disrupt the market.
