WhatsApp banned over 19 lakh accounts in May, here's why

WhatsApp has released its monthly report for the month of May under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. According to the most recent report, the messaging app has banned over 19 lakh Indian accounts in a month, primarily for violating the platform's guidelines. The most recent report covers the period from 1 May 2022 to 31 May 2022.

A WhatsApp spokesperson commented on the new monthly report, saying, "In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, we've published our report for the month of May 2022." This user-safety report includes information about user complaints and the actions taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp's own preventive measures to combat abuse on our platform. According to the most recent Monthly Report, WhatsApp banned over 1.9 million accounts in May."

"Among end-to-end encrypted messaging services, WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse." We have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge technology, data scientists and experts, and processes over the years to keep our users safe on our platform," the spokesperson continued.

So, why did WhatsApp ban these accounts in the first place, and what should these users do now?

WhatsApp has previously stated that it typically bans accounts that violate the company's policies and guidelines. WhatsApp, for example, bans accounts if they are involved in spreading false information, forwarding an unverified message to multiple contacts, and so on. To combat such incidents, the messaging platform has implemented a number of initiatives, including external link verification and others. The messaging platform also flags messages that have been forwarded multiple times, which are usually fake.

WhatsApp also makes tools and resources available to help prevent harmful behaviour on the platform. "We are especially focused on prevention because we believe it is far better to prevent harmful activity than to detect it after harm has occurred." "Abuse detection operates at three stages of an account's life: during registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback, which we receive in the form of user reports and blocks," the company stated in the report. WhatsApp also revealed that "analysts augment these systems to evaluate edge cases and help us improve our effectiveness over time."

According to rumours and leaks, WhatsApp is working on allowing users to revoke their banned accounts within the app. The messaging platform has not officially confirmed the capability.
