Samsung strives to keep its position atop the foldable smartphone market. The South Korean tech behemoth is working on less expensive alternatives to the Galaxy Z Fold/ Flip models. According to reports, the Galaxy A Fold and Galaxy A Flip models are in the works.
Samsung currently controls roughly 80% of the foldable smartphone market, but it may face stiff competition from its rivals. There are rumours that Apple is working on a foldable device, which would join a slew of cheaper foldables already on the market. The Galaxy A Fold and Flip models will help Samsung maintain and possibly expand its market dominance.
Apart from the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3 foldable phones, Samsung also offers the OG Fold model, but these devices are not cheap. The OG Fold from 2019 costs $1,800, while the Z Flip3 costs around $1,000. When the Z Fold3 was released, there were rumours that Samsung would release a less expensive version. However, Samsung has yet to reveal a lower-cost foldable. However, it appears that there is a good chance that a foldable is in the works.
A leak suggests that the Galaxy A lineup will include foldable models. This is supported by news from the Korean news outlet ET News. According to the ET News report, Samsung is working on a foldable smartphone that will cost around 1 million won ($767).
To achieve a lower price, Samsung will most likely use less powerful components such as chipsets and cameras. Samsung will also remove premium features from the Galaxy A Fold/ Flip models, leaving only core foldable functions. The Galaxy A Fold and Flip models are expected to be released in 2024. Samsung is keeping its foldable plans under wraps for the time being.
