A lawyer for singer Ricky Martin has strongly denied disturbing allegations that the singer abused his nephew, calling him "not only untrue" but "disgusting".
Martin was given a restraining order in Puerto Rico in early July, citing domestic abuse. On Friday, TMZ reported that the singer brother, Eric Martin, identified the alleged victim as Martin's 21-year-old nephew, according to Spanish news site Marca. However, attorney Martin Singer claims that Martin nephew is "struggling with profound mental health challenges."
"Of course, Ricky Martin has never been — and would never be — involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew," Singer said in a Variety statement. "The notion is not only false, but also repulsive. We're all hoping that this man gets the help he desperately needs. But, most importantly, we hope that this heinous case is dismissed as soon as a judge can examine the facts."
The petitioner had not been identified when the restraining order was presented on July 2. According to El Vocero in Puerto Rico, the action was allegedly taken by someone Martin had dated for seven months. The petitioner claimed at the time that Martin had denied the break-up and had been seen several times near their home.
According to TMZ, Martin is scheduled to appear in court on July 21 to determine whether the restraining order should be maintained or terminated.
The singer is currently involved in another legal fight, with his former manager suing him for $3 million in unpaid commissions.
