Nikon is reportedly exiting the market for SLR cameras

Nikon is rumoured to be discontinuing the development of single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras soon. According to a new report, the Japanese camera manufacturer will focus on digital offerings after SLR sales have declined due to intense competition from smartphone manufacturers.

Professional photographers rely heavily on Nikon SLRs and mirrorless cameras. The company has been making cameras for nearly 60 years. However, as smartphone camera technology advances, camera companies' sales have fallen. Nikon, according to Nikkei Asia, plans to focus resources on mirrorless cameras, which have become mainstream products as a result of more advanced digital technologies.

Since June 2020, the camera manufacturer has not released a successor to its D6 DSLR, which has been its flagship model. However, the company has been aggressively launching mirrorless cameras at various price points in its Z-series. The Nikon Z30 is the most recent model to be released in India, joining the Nikon Z 50, Z 70, and flagship mirrorless cameras such as the Nikon Z 7II.

According to the Nikkei Asia report, Nikon has already ceased development of compact digital cameras. While the company intends to focus more on mirrorless cameras, it will continue to manufacture and distribute SLRs.

Mirrorless cameras have grown in popularity in comparison to SLRs due to their compact form factor, lightweight design, more responsive viewfinder, and modern technology such as the ability to use image sensors to convert light into electric signals rather than relying on a large mirror inside. Mirrorless cameras, on the other hand, are typically more expensive than SLRs in the same price range.

Mirrorless cameras surpassed SLRs in sales in 2020, despite their higher price. According to the report, over 2.93 million mirrorless cameras will be sold in 2020, compared to 3.37 million SLRs. However, there has been a general decline. The combined market peaked at 11.67 million cameras in 2017, but by 2021, it had dropped to 5.34 million.
