Apple announced its redesigned MacBook Air 2022 at WWDC 2022, but an even bigger update could come with the 15-inch MacBook Air. While we won't see it this year, several credible sources that claim the first MacBook Air to come out of the 13-inch form factor are genuine and we're curious to see what Apple adds. Here's a quick overview of everything we know so far about Apple next plans for the 15-inch MacBook Air.
MacBook Air 15-inch launch date and pricing
Both Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg have predicted that the MacBook Air 15-inch will be available in the spring of 2023. Other than Tim Cook and Craig Federighi, there are few Apple sources you'll trust more than Kuo and Mark Gurman, the reporter behind the Bloomberg article. While Gurman mentioned a spring launch, Kuo mentioned a second-quarter 2023 announcement or launch, which could mean a June announcement or launch, as we saw at WWDC this year with the M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
We don't have any compelling rumours about its pricing as of yet, so we can only speculate based on the current lineup. The MacBook Air 2022 starts at $1,199, while the MacBook Pro 2022 starts at $1,299 and goes up from there. With the 14-inch MacBook Pro costing $1,999, we can keep the price of the 15-inch MacBook Air between $1,399 and $1,599, not much lower.

The MacBook Air 15-inch expected to should have a 15.2-inch display (the MacBook Air 2022 has a 13.6-inch display) and otherwise follow in the footsteps of its smaller sibling. This includes a newer squared-off chassis, significantly reduced bezels, MagSafe charging, a 1080p webcam, and improved speakers.
So, what is preventing this from being a MacBook Pro? According to rumours, it will have the same two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports as the smaller Air, as well as no HDMI or SD card slot to help keep the weight down. It will almost certainly lack fans, but because of its larger size and larger battery, it should outperform the MacBook Air 2022 in terms of performance.
MacBook Air 15-inch: performance
According to the most recent rumours from Ming-Chi Kuo, the 15-inch MacBook Air could include the M2 as a base option, as well as the M2 Pro. This will be a departure from the MacBook Air 2022, which is only available with the M2 processor.
Given that the larger MacBook Air retains its fanless design, a defining feature of the modern MacBook Air, this would point to an improved thermal design capable of handling more powerful processors. Naturally, none of this is certain, as Apple has yet to announce the M2 Pro, which is expected to be a new debut for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Outlook
While we may have a little less than a year until the launch of this super-sized MacBook Air 15-inch, Apple has had little success in recent years in keeping its secrets, so we can expect it. Let's hope for more rumours and leaks in the next month.
A larger MacBook Air would be an intriguing choice as a college laptop for those who want the larger display of the MacBook Pro 14 or 16, but don't require the processing power and are content to save a few 100$. It fills a gap in Apple excellent current MacBook lineup and follows in the footsteps of the rumoured iPhone 14 Max update, which brings a more affordable big-screen option to the market.
