Low-battery anxiety is real. I've been worried about running out of battery power while driving home for as long as I've been using flagship smartphones. It was only two months ago that I purchased the most expensive slab phone, which helped me put an end to my battery anxiety.
Even after almost a year, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is still the battery champion in 2022. In terms of battery life, no current flagship smartphone comes close to last year's top-tier iPhone. And it's been a game changer in terms of how I use my phones.
iPhone 13 Pro Max is still the battery champ in 2022
The primary purpose of a mobile phone is to allow people in two different locations to communicate instantly, thereby alleviating human anxiety about loneliness. According to a study conducted at Eskişehir Osmangazi University in Turkey, if a phone dies, it can be a particularly traumatic experience because these devices have created communication dependency.
If you're like me, you've probably stored various aspects of your life on your smartphone. My smartphone contains everything I need, including my driver licence, meeting notes, cab-sharing and food apps, family photos, and banking apps. And, thanks to the digital revolution, I can even access my money from my phone. If the battery dies or I receive a low-battery warning while out socialising, I will return home as soon as possible. After all, I can't afford to be stranded without a cab or a payment service, which are two of the most important tools for getting me home.
Because smartphones have evolved into more than just communication devices, we must ensure that they are always operational. However, modern mobile phones have yet to solve the issue of low-battery anxiety. Most of the 2022 Android flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S22 Ultra, OnePlus 10 Pro, RedMagic 7 Pro, Black Shark 5 Pro, Xiaomi 12 Pro, and others, have been tested by me. And they all had one thing in common. If I choose to use GPS navigation for an hour while doing all of the above, the battery drains like a pizza in front of Joey Tribbiani.
That's where the iPhone 13 Pro Max steps in and shines. You can do it all - play games, walk around town for an hour, FaceTime your friends, doom scroll social media, and more. And even then, you'll have about 30% battery left when you get home. I've had days where I've got about six hours of screen-on time and 40% battery left. I can't imagine anyone using the best Android phone of the year to this extent and coming close to that mark.
I mostly work from home, but I occasionally work from one of my favourite cafes in Delhi. I carry a charging brick with me for my MacBook, but with the iPhone 13 Pro Max, I can skip packing it and still be fine. After a long day at work, I ended up going to a 1 a.m. concert at a bar. I used my phone to make payments, book cabs, and show the concert tickets at the door. I arrived at the bar with 40% of my battery charged, and by the time I got home, I had only 20%. My low-battery anxiety has been completely eliminated by the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Where improvements can be made
Nothing is flawless. Despite all of the battery life bells and whistles, the iPhone 13 Pro Max charges slowly. With Android manufacturers offering up to 150W fast charging and "a day's battery life with a 15-minute charge," even the most expensive iPhone lags.
If I forget to plug in the iPhone 13 Pro Max at night, I know I won't be able to fast charge and get up to 50% battery life in about 15 minutes, which is a bit unfair by 2022 standards. I'm hoping for fast charging in the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro Max. If Apple can combine this excellent endurance with equally excellent charging, the battery champ will have an unbeatable lead in the battery department.
We're halfway through 2022, and the battery champion remains last year iPhone 13 Pro Max. Battery life is becoming an afterthought with all of the Android flagships focusing on performance. I hope companies pay more attention to battery offerings and optimise their flagship smartphones so that they can easily last an entire day. Otherwise, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is unrivalled because it has no competition.
