Elon Musk has mentioned a Mars colony several times, but his much-anticipated project is still in the works. His Mars project recently took another step closer to reality after the US government completed an environmental review of SpaceX massive, futuristic Starship - designed for the Red Planet. In his most recent tweets, Musk expressed optimism about the mission, saying that "humanity will reach Mars" in our lifetime. He stated in a series of tweets that the Moon brought humanity together in 1969 and that "Mars can do that in the future."
Musk was referring to the first Moon landing in 1969, which accelerated several space projects in the United States and around the world.
Musk previously stated that his SpaceX ship will land on Mars in 2029, though the project is still in its early stages. Prior to that, fans anticipated a Mars landing in the mid-2020. Currently, SpaceX does not have a launch licence, and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set 75 conditions for Starship first orbital flight test to reduce the impact on the region. The Starship, which stands nearly 400 feet (120 metres) tall, is the most powerful rocket ever built and is designed to transport people to the Moon and Mars. Nasa intends to use it for the space agency planned lunar landing of astronauts in 2025.

Activists have previously criticised the Mars project. In 2021, Duke of Cambridge Prince William stated that humanity should prioritise Earth preservation over space tourism. He also stated that great minds and brains should be "trying to repair this planet, not looking for the next place to live." This occurred at the same time that SpaceX competitor Virgin Galactic successfully launched a private spacecraft (VSS Unity space plane) into suborbital space.
