Aliens: Fireteam was a good third-person cooperative shooter, and Aliens: Dark Descent appears to be a promising top-down cooperative shooter, but they both have one major flaw: neither resembles Alien Isolation, one of the scariest horror games ever made. With the announcement of a new single-player Aliens game today, there's renewed hope (at least in my opinion) that we'll get something in the spirit of that 2014 masterpiece.
This new singleplayer game, simply titled Aliens (I repeat "singleplayer" for emphasis), will be developed by Survios, which has a history of developing VR games, including The Walking Dead Onslaught and Sprint Vector. Survios describes the Unreal Engine 5 project as a "intense single-player, action horror game set in the iconic Alien universe." The plot will take place between the Alien and Aliens films, and will revolve around "a battle-hardened veteran with a vendetta against the Xenomorphs."

Given the "action" in "action horror," it's safe to assume that this battle-hardened veteran will be well-armed, because no one fights Xenomorphs with their fists. So we shouldn't expect anything like Alien Isolation, but rather something more akin to Resident Evil, Dead Space, or the upcoming Callisto Protocol.
More information on the game will be released at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, but it has been confirmed for consoles, PC, and VR, implying that it will be playable in both VR and on a regular ol' screen.
Aliens: Dark Descent, the other upcoming Aliens game, is still set to release sometime in 2023. It's a top-down, twin-stick shooter cooperative game that... whatever you want, 20th Century Games, but it's fun.
