The new iOS 16 operating system for the iPhone has yet to reach the general public, though beta versions are already available to developers. Its latest developer beta for iOS 16 (Beta 2) was released earlier this week, and it appears Apple is taking spam SMS on the iPhone Messages app seriously.
Apple users in the United States will soon see a 'Report Junk' option inside the Messages app under the Unknown Senders category, according to TechCrunch. It appears to assist users in reporting spam messages, but the feature will only work with certain carriers, though this is unclear.

Users in India may not see this option just yet, but Apple is said to be improving its message filter system. The iPhone Messages app received several categories with the release of iOS 14 to differentiate SMS from known and unknown users.
It also added a 'filtered by SMS filter' option, which includes 'transactions' and 'promotions.' Truecaller's third-party SMS filters are also available to users. You must enable it by going to Settings > Messages > Unknown and Spam > SMS Filtering.
According to the report, new subcategories for 'transactions' and 'promotions' will be added to effectively filter spam SMS. "The Transactions category includes Finance, Reminders, Orders, Health, Public Services, Weather, Carrier, Rewards, and Others," it says, while "the Promotions category includes Offers, Coupons, and Others."
According to reports, Indian iPhone users will get an extractable events feature in Messages to help them save movie or train tickets. These can be added to the Calendar Inbox, but their functionality is unknown.
Meanwhile, the upcoming iOS 16 and macOS Ventura will include a new feature called 'automatic verification,' which will allow users to avoid annoying CAPTCHA and puzzles on various websites. It is creating a Private Access Token to ensure that the system accessing the platform is genuine and not a bot.
Following the release of the iPhone 14 series, Apple will most likely release iOS 16 to the general public in October or early November. The OS will be available to public beta testers in July.
