Chromebook users to lose access to Zoom app

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Zoom and several other video calling apps drew a lot of attention for their ability to connect with people all over the world. The service remains popular, but it appears that Chromebooks will soon lose access to the Zoom app. The company has begun notifying users that the Zoom app will no longer work on Chromebooks. Everything you need to know is right here.

According to 9to5Google, several people have begun receiving service alerts stating that the Zoom app "will no longer be officially supported after August 2022." So, what is the reason for the removal of the Zoom app from Chromebooks? Google announced in August 2020 that it will phase out Chrome apps because the company believes that the open web is progressing and that Chrome apps are no longer required. There was a time when not all of the features were available, but that is no longer the case. As a result, Google is directing more people to the web version.

Google has stated that it will phase out almost all Chrome apps on ChromeOS beginning in June 2022, which is why Zoom is also being phased out. However, the company has extended the deadline, and the notification states that it will take place in August of this year.

So, how will you now be able to use the Zoom app on a Chromebook?

Don't worry, users will only lose access to the app and will be able to use the service via the web version. According to the official notification from the video calling service, people can use the "new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join on ChromeOS," just like it does on macOS. Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) provide users with an app-like experience on the web version of services.

All you have to do is search for "Zoom PWA" on Google. You will be sent the link. Users can join a meeting without signing in by simply clicking "Join Meeting" after launching the Zoom for Chrome PWA. Simply click Sign in to sign in and start or schedule your own meeting.
