Microsoft is making it simple for Windows 11 users to transfer their apps to a new PC or Laptop. Microsoft announced at Build 2022 that it will soon begin testing a new feature that will allow you to restore apps instead of having to manually install apps from your library when you change your PC. Because of the current state of the Microsoft Store, Windows has never offered a way to automatically restore apps in its long history.
“We will soon test a new feature in the Windows Insider channel that helps customers automatically restore their apps, previously installed from the Microsoft Store, to their new Windows device to make it easier for customers to transition to their new PCs quickly and seamlessly,” wrote Giorgio Sardo, General Manager, Microsoft Store, in a blog post.
Because the Microsoft Store lacks several popular apps, Windows users must rely on downloading the EXE or MSI file of an app and installing it. However, Microsoft has shown that it is working to improve its native app store. Firefox, Zoom, and Adobe Acrobat Reader are already available in the Microsoft Store, but the current count is insufficient for the restore feature to function. Microsoft stated that it has opened the store to all developers (.NET, C++, Electron, Flutter, Qt, Rust, and others), which will aid in the removal of the waitlist for win32 apps.
While the upcoming Windows 11 feature may provide some relief to users, it will not benefit everyone as much as people who switch PCs frequently. It will also benefit developers who frequently use virtual machines and multiple PCs. This feature will save them from manually downloading and installing third-party packages, which is not a big deal but can be time-consuming.
“This will also help developers retain their customers without having to remind customers to re-download their app,” Wrote Sardo.
Microsoft also announced that it is working to improve search within the Microsoft Store. When you search for an app, the search results will prioritise apps, while the rest of the results associated with the search term will be prioritised lower. The Start menu will also get a new app search feature, allowing you to type the name of an app in the Start menu to search for it in the Microsoft Store and install it directly. It will be available to Windows Insiders soon, with the stable rollout following later this year.
