Some Kindle models will lose access to the Kindle store

Amazon notified several Kindle users this week who still have a few older Kindle models linked to their accounts. According to the notice, beginning August 17, certain models will lose access to the Kindle Store, preventing users from browsing, purchasing, or borrowing books on the older devices. That may appear to be the end of the road for those who own one of the EoL e-readers, but there is still hope. Continue reading to find out which models are losing Kindle Store access and how you can still get new books on them after the August deadline.

Beginning August 17, Amazon will discontinue support for the following Kindle e-readers:

  • Kindle (2nd-gen) International
  • Kindle DX International
  • Kindle Keyboard
  • Kindle (4th-gen)
  • Kindle (5th-gen)

Some Kindle models will lose access to the Kindle store

Starting August 17, if you own any of the Kindle models listed above, you will be unable to browse, purchase, or borrow books from the Kindle Store. However, Good e-Reader reports that you should be able to access existing books and have new ones delivered to these models from Amazon website.

For the first time, Amazon has completely stop store access for older Kindle models. Unfortunately, the company has not provided an explanation for this change. The news comes just a few weeks after Amazon announced ePub support for its modern Kindle e-readers.

Do you own any of the Kindle models mentioned above? What do you intend to do after August 17? Will you get a new Kindle or stick with your old faithful e-reader and buy books from Amazon website? If it's the former, we highly recommend the new Kindle with a built-in front light. The ad-supported version is only $89.99, which is nothing short of a steal. We recommend the brand new Kindle Paperwhite to those who don't like its tiny 6-inch display. For a small $50 premium, it adds a larger 6.8-inch display to the mix.
