Ubisoft has confirmed that the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time reboot will be developed in Montréal, Canada, after months of silence. Ubisoft also confirmed to The Verge that it will not be releasing in the fiscal year 2023, which ends March 31st in Canada. Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune teams have been working on the game since 2020.
Ubisoft Montréal, the birthplace of the epic Sands of Time trilogy, will now lead the development of Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time Remake, according to the company announcement. "This is an important decision, and the team will now take the time needed to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic when it's ready, building on the work done by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai".
The remake of The Sands of Time is the first significant title created by Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune studios. Ubisoft did not go into detail about the studio change.
"We're proud of the work done by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their experiences as the new team continues to work to deliver a great remake," Ubisoft spokesperson Antoine Leduc-Labelle told The Verge. "As a result, we are no longer targeting an FY23 release." Players will be kept up to date on the project as it progresses".
The Sands of Time remake is a remastering, not a reskin, and was developed using Ubisoft's AnvilNext engine. It was originally scheduled for release in January 2021 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. There is no update on X/S or PS5 optimization.
Ubisoft delayed the release of The Sands of Time for a few months due to pandemic-related concerns before deciding to postpone it indefinitely. The game's most recent update arrived in October of last year, assuring fans that the developers were still working on it.
