Tom Hanks, fresh from the Cannes premiere of "Elvis," stars in Disney+ live-action "Pinocchio" remake, which will premiere on September 8 as part of Disney+ Day. Geppetto, the puppeteer who wishes for a son, is played by Tom Hanks. Cynthia Erivo plays the Blue Fairy, who grants Geppetto wish and transforms puppet Pinocchio into a real boy, with 13-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as his voice. Jiminy Cricket, the animated narrator, is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Lorraine Bracco, Luke Evans, and Keegan-Michael Key also appear in the film. The first teaser for the film can be seen below.
The live-action "Pinocchio," based on Carlo Collodi 1883 Italian novel and the 1940 Disney film, has been in development since 2015. While a number of writers and directors were previously attached to the project, including "Paddington" director Paul King, longtime Hanks collaborator Robert Zemeckis took over as director. The "Back to the Future" and "Polar Express" screenwriter collaborated on the script with "Wonka" screenwriter Simon Farnaby and "Cinderella" writer Chris Weitz in 2015.
The first major change for the live-action "Pinocchio" is that the Blue Fairy sings the famous ballad "When You Wish Upon a Star," which was originally performed by Jiminy Cricket. Featuring Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award winner Erivo voice as the Blue Fairy is a no-brainer for the film, with Erivo donning the Blue Fairy makeup before later going green as Elphaba in Universal Pictures' "Wicked."
In terms of Disney+ "Pinocchio," it should not be confused with Netflix "Pinocchio" adaptation, which is directed by Guillermo del Toro. The stop-motion animated film, starring David Bradley as Geppetto, will be released in December 2022. Sebastian J. Cricket, the story narrator, is played by Ewan McGregor. The ensemble cast includes Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton, as well as newcomer Gregory Mann as the titular "real boy" Pinocchio.
Long a mainstream director at the forefront of visual storytelling in Hollywood, Zemeckis embraces more live-action in this film than in recent, CG-dominated family folk tales like "The Polar Express" and "Christmas Carol." With "The Witches," based on Roald Dahl novel, he recently brought another live-action film based on a children story to Disney+.
“Pinocchio” premieres September 8 on Disney+.
