Grover Underwood and Annabeth Chase have been cast in Disney+ "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series.
Aryan Simhadri will play Grover, and Leah Sava Jeffries will play Annabeth, Variety has learned exclusively. They will be joined by Walker Scobell, who will play Percy, who was previously announced as the series lead.
The streamer ordered the series adaptation of Rick Riordan book series in January. The live-action series tells the fantastical story of the titular 12-year-old modern demigod (Scobell), who is just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural abilities when Zeus, the sky god, accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Percy, with the help of his friends Grover and Annabeth, must embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to find it and restore order to Olympus.
Grover is a satyr disguised as a 12-year-old boy, half boy and half goat. He genuinely cares about others and will always do what is best for them, even if it means sacrificing himself. Though he is naturally cautious, he will always throw himself into a fight to protect his friends, particularly his best friend Percy.
Annabeth is the true daughter of Athena, the Greek goddess. She is a brilliant strategist with a lively and inquisitive mind. She longs to test her mettle in the human world, which she barely remembers after spending the last five years at Camp Half-Blood. She teaches Percy how to survive in the mythological world, and he, in turn, assists her in bonding with her humanity.
Simhadri was most recently seen in the Disney+ remake of "Cheaper by the Dozen" and in the Disney Channel original film "Spin." He also appeared in "Just Roll With It," a Disney Channel improvisational sitcom, and "Mira, Royal Detective," a Disney Junior animated series. Among his other credits are the Paramount+ animated series "Adventures in Wonder Park," "The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run," the "Adventure Time" TV movie "Distant Lands," and the WWE/Netflix film "The Main Event."
They have been replicated by Paradigm, Industry Entertainment, and Goodman Geno.
Jeffries is best known for her roles as Lola in Fox music drama "Empire" and Erica, Lil Rel Howery daughter, in Fox multi-cam comedy "Rel." She was also in the Lifetime film "Faith Under Fire." She will next be seen in the thriller film "Beast," opposite Idris Elba, and in the Amazon film "Something From Tiffany," produced by Hello Sunshine.
She has been repped by The Ausbrink Agency, M88 and Fox Rothschild.
"Percy Jackson and the Olympians" production will begin soon in Vancouver. Riordan and Jon Steinberg are writing the pilot, which will be directed by James Bobin. The series is overseen by Steinberg and his producing partner Dan Shotz, who also serve as executive producers alongside Bobin, Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson, and Gotham Group Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Goldberg. The studio is called 20th Television. Salke was the president of Touchstone Television when the show was first developed. Production is set to begin this summer.
