The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), according to reports, has launched an extensive investigation into Sony proposed acquisition of Bungie. In January, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its intention to pay $3.6 billion for the Destiny developer and Halo creator. The FTC is currently investigating the transaction, which has taken a more active approach to scrutinising major technology mergers under the supervision of Lina Khan, who was appointed chair of the commission by President Joe Biden in March 2021.
If the acquisition goes through as planned, Sony claims Bungie will be "an independent subsidiary" of the PlayStation company and will continue to be a multiplatform studio. Bungie has also stated that existing and future games in development will not be exclusive to PlayStation platforms after the deal is completed. VGC occasionally publishes affiliate links. While the Federal Trade Commission did not investigate Microsoft $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda, which was completed in March 2021, it is currently investigating the Xbox maker proposed $68.7 billion merger with Activision Blizzard. The FTC investigation may have little impact on Sony Bungie deal, but it reflects growing concern about potential antitrust issues in the gaming industry at a time of increasing consolidation. M&A activity in the games industry reached a new high of $85 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $150 billion this year.
