Arma Reforger is the next game in the long-running military simulation series, and it will serve as an advance force for Arma 4, according to Bohemia Interactive 'Future Of Arma stream today. The majority of the information Bohemia had to relay was leaked on Reddit over the weekend, but it's always good to get official confirmation of these things, right?
Today's stream announced that Arma Reforger is now available in early access on Steam and that the series is coming to consoles for the first time via Game Preview on Xbox Series X/S. By the way, Arma 4 is coming, but Bohemia has yet to set a firm release date, telling RPS that development is "ongoing." They also call Arma Reforger a "work in progress." There are two multiplayer modes to battle in across the 164 square kilometres of map in its newly released early access version: team-versus-team in 'Conflict' and a scenario editor that operates in real-time called 'Game Master.'
Arma Reforger, according to Bohemia, is a stand-alone platform with two functions. On the one hand, it lets the Arma community to experiment with their new Enfusion modding engine, while also allowing Arma 4 developers to gather information and comments ahead of the game's eventual release. The setting for Reforger is Everon, the same island featured in Arma: Cold War Assault, which was released in 2001. During the 1980s, you can play as either the US or Soviet Russia at the end of the Cold War.
More than anything else, today's reveal appears to be about sending Bohemia's snazzy new-fangled engine down the catwalk. In December of last year, Bohemia announced that they were working on a new engine and that it would be used in any future Arma games. It appears to be an improvement over the Real Virtuality engine that Arma has been using since it was Operation: Flashpoint, and my desktop fainted every time I tried to run it. Arma Reforger is now available in Early Access on Steam. Arma 4 will be released once it is completed.
