"Why didn't they ask evans" New murder-mystery series

"Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" is a new murder-mystery series with a lot of star power.

Hugh Laurie adapts and directs the BritBox original show, which is based on Agatha Christie 1934 novel of the same name.

Bobby Jones (Will Poulter) and his friend Lady Frances "Frankie" Derwent (Lucy Boynton) discover the body of a dying man who, with his last breath, asks the series' cryptic question.

Frankie's aristocratic parents are played by Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent in the show.

"It was such a privilege to get to watch them improvise together, bounce ideas off each other, and have a lot of fun with the material," Boynton said of her onscreen parents.

She continued, "It was a privilege to share space with them." She described the pair of iconic actors as "inspiring." Poulter and I just wanted to stand back and observe."

Boynton also revealed to ET Canada what it was like to be transported back to the 1930s era thanks to the show's intricate costuming.

"I always think that the costuming and fitting process is the first time you really step into that character," she says. "The way you put together an ensemble tells you so much more about the characters that isn't on the page." It was a lot of fun being able to access Frankie in that way."

Meanwhile, Laurie explained why Boynton and Poulter's chemistry made them ideal for their roles in the show.

"They're cute," he said. "They're extremely bright, funny, and quick on their feet." The most important thing is that they get along. Of course, it's been done – people have made movies like that, as well as love stories in which they can't stand each other. Fortunately, they clicked, and it was a joy to watch them enjoy each other."

Laurie also discussed what it was like to direct and star in the show.

"It was tricky," he admitted, "but I volunteered for it, so it's my fault." "I was kind of prepared for it, but doing more than one thing at a time is always a little strange." In general, I'm not very good at multitasking. It was a challenge, but it was also a lot of fun. I had some days where I thought to myself, 'I've made a terrible mistake here,' but the good days far outweighed the bad."

"Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" premieres Tuesday, April 12 on BritBox.
