Best TV Shows on Apple TV Plus

In the world of streaming TV, Apple TV Plus is one of the newer kids on the block. The good news is that it has some big names and some absolutely barnburner TV shows, ranging from the first season of The Mosquito Coast to Ted Lasso and Reese Witherspoon Emmy winning drama The Morning Show.

Apple TV Plus, like competitors Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon's Prime Video, features exclusive, original content. However, unlike the other services, Apple only streams content that it has created. As a result, the catalogue wasn't huge when the service launched in November 2019, but it's quickly filling up.

Best movies and TV shows available on Apple TV Plus

The good news is that if you recently purchased an Apple product, you probably already have free access to the streaming service. Here a list of some of the best movies and TV shows available on Apple TV Plus.

Best TV Shows on Apple TV Plus

The Afterparty (_2022_)

The Afterparty, a comedic murder mystery in the vein of Rian Johnson 2019 film Knives Out, is a star studded whodunit that will keep you guessing and laughing with each episode. Tiffany Haddish, Dave Franco, Ilana Glazer, Ben Schwartz, and others appear on the show, which airs new episodes every week. If you enjoy a good mystery comedy mix, The Afterparty should be at the top of your to watch list.

Trying (_2020_)

In this British comedy, Nikki and Jason want to have a baby but are having difficulty conceiving. They decide to adopt, a process that will inevitably present them with new challenges. Trying is charming and low-stakes fun, as well as laugh-out-loud funny. If you're looking for some lighthearted television, this show is for you.

Ted Lasso (_2020_)

You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy the comedy series Ted Lasso. It follows relentlessly upbeat American coach Ted Lasso taking charge of a British team, and is produced by the show's Golden Globe-winning star Jason Sudeikis and Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence. Consider it a cross between Friday Night Lights and Saturday Night Live (in London). Season 2 is now available to watch online.

The Mosquito Coast (_2021_)

Justin Theroux plays Allie Fox, an eccentric inventor who takes his family off the grid in protest of society failings. Apple blockbuster drama is based on the novel by the actor's uncle, Paul Theroux (previously filmed with Harrison Ford in 1986). After season one, Apple has already renewed this modernised version of The Mosquito Coast for a second season.

The Shrink Next Door (_2021_)

Any show that casts both Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd as leads is already doing something very right in my opinion. Ferrell and Rudd play characters on opposite ends of the personality spectrum in the drama miniseries The Shrink Next Door: Ferrell is a sniffling, timid textile business owner, and his co-star is an egotistic therapist with manipulative tendencies. When the two come together, the result is both unsettling and tantalising, making The Shrink Next Door a film you should see for yourself.

Lisey Story (_2021_)

Stephen King adapted Lisey Story from his own novel, and it stars Julianne Moore as a grieving widow who spookily revisits her marriage to her late husband, a famous novelist played by Clive Owen.

The Morning Show (_2019_)

Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston star and produce this timely series about office politics in the #MeToo era, as a TV network is rocked by the indiscretions of a host played by Steve Carell. Billy Crudup won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 2020 Emmy Awards, among other honours. The Morning Show is worth watching because of its award-winning drama, strong cast and timely themes.

Long Way Up (_2020_)

Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman get back on their bikes and ride north through South and Central America from Argentina. The petrolhead duo goes green in this sequel to the popular travel shows Long Way Round and Long Way Down. On Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycles, they travel 13,000 miles and 13 countries. It debuted on September 18 of last year, and new episodes are streaming on a regular basis on Apple TV Plus.

Tiny World (_2020_)

A nature show about small creatures narrated by Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd. Absolute brilliance. Tiny World, like seemingly every other modern nature documentary, is beautifully shot and brilliantly compelling.

Defending Jacob (_2020_)

Chris Evans stars in a dark-tinged legal drama about a family caught up in a murder investigation in Massachusetts. Defending Jacob may be familiar ground, but fans of engrossing character-driven crime dramas will be drawn in.

Mythic Quest: Raven Banquet (_2020_)

Mythic Quest: Raven Banquet is required reading for anyone with even a passing interest in video games or the industry that creates them. It's one-of-a-kind, funny, and heartfelt in parts. It's on familiar ground, but it's well worth a look.

Servant (_2019_)

M. Night Shyamalan, the director of The Sixth Sense, brings his brand of creepy domestic drama to episodic TV in Servant, created and written by Tony Basgallop. Following a heartbreaking loss, two bereaved parents adopt a hyperrealistic baby doll to help them cope, but danger and deception lurk in the nursery.

Little America (_2020_)

Ordinary people in Little America have big dreams. In a heartwarming anthology series packed with a mix of funny, sweet, romantic, and often surprising tales, a heavyweight cast tells stories of immigrants living their lives.

Home Before Dark (_2020_)

Home Before Dark is based on the reporting of real-life journalist Hilde Lysiak and tells the storey of a young girl who moves from Brooklyn to a small lakeside town. It starts slowly but quickly picks up steam, with some strong central performances, particularly in the lead role.

Dickinson (_2019-2021_)

Dickinson adapts the life of real-life American poet Emily Dickinson into a sort of period drama. It's not historically accurate (Emily and her adolescent friends act more like Riverdale characters), but it's entertaining.

Truth Be Told (_2019_)

Truth Be Told is a drama for true crime fans that capitalises on the recent trend of fictionalised crime podcasts. Octavia Spencer and Aaron Paul play a podcaster and a prisoner who are linked by a horrific crime committed years ago, launching a whodunit that draws in both their families in an entertaining blend of character-driven dramas like Big Little Lies and true crime stories like Making a Murderer and The Staircase.
