How to clean iPhone speakers and improve the sound quality

If your iPhone speakers have been muffled recently, you'll need to know how to clean them. This operation may make you angry - after all, your phone speakers are delicate, and cleaning them may be as difficult as learning how to clean an iPhone charging port.

However, it's critical that you do this because the speakers will accumulate dust, dirt, and debris over time, resulting in poor sound quality during calls and media playback.

But don't worry, cleaning the speakers on your iPhone isn't as tough as you would imagine. It only takes a few common home items, as well as some care and patience. We'll walk you through all you need to know and answer any questions you have along the way.

WHAT YOU'LL REQUIRE

  • A brush with soft bristles (optional)
  • Painter's tape (optional)
  • Toothpick (optional)
  • Air blower (optional)
  • Light source (optional)

Depending on what you have at home, you can use one of several methods to clean up your iPhone speakers. We'll walk you through each one right now.

The most important thing to remember when cleaning these components is to avoid using any liquids. Even with rubbing alcohol, liquids can easily damage the internals of your iPhone, so you won't be doing yourself any favours.

First Method: A soft bristled brush

Apple recommends cleaning the speakers with a soft bristles brush.

1. Take off all of your iPhone cases and screen protectors.

2. Shine a flashlight into the speaker openings, such as the Energizer LED Tactical Flashlight ($9.98, Amazon), to see what you're up against.

3. To avoid causing damage, make sure the brush you're about to use is soft-bristled, clean, and dry. This is where paint brushes or makeup brushes come in handy. The 30-piece Round Paint Brush Set ($6.99, Amazon) is one of our favourites.

4. Begin by gently brushing the receiving speaker from side to side, angling the brush so that dust is brushed out rather than pushed in.

5. Repeat this process several times, tapping the brush between strokes to remove any excess dust.

6. Remove extra dust from the lower speaker holes near the charging port with a soft bristles brush. To clear dust and dirt, carefully insert the bristles into the holes, rotate lightly, and remove.

Second Method: Painter’s tape

Painter tape or masking tape is another popular option. This tape isn't as strong as other types, but it won't leave any residue on your phone.

1. Take off the case and screen protector so you can get to the speakers easily.

2. To get a better view of the debris, use your flashlight.

3. Wrap a small piece of sticky-side painter's tape around the tip of your finger. Duck Clean Release Painter's Tape ($4.77, Amazon) comes highly recommended.

4. Roll your finger from side to side over the receiving speaker to collect dust. It's not necessary to exert a lot of pressure; just enough to get the tape reach into the speaker.

5. To insert it inside the small speaker hole at the bottom of your phone, you'll need to roll the tape thin.

Third Method: Toothpick

Toothpicks can be used for this task, but they should be used with caution since if used wrongly, they might damage the internals. As a result, you should utilise this strategy at your own risk. Toothpicks should only be used if you can see the lower speakers near the charging port are clogged.

1. If necessary, remove your phone case and have your flashlight handy so you can see what you're doing.

2. Gently insert the toothpick into the speaker holes with the sharp end of a wooden or plastic toothpick. When you're doing this, don't use any pressure, and if you feel resistance, don't go any farther.

3. Then gently tilt the toothpick up slightly and keep it tilted upwards until you pull it out, until it pulls out the debris. Make sure you don't bend it down to avoid damage.

Fourth Method: Air blower

Some websites recommend cleaning iPhone speakers with compressed air, but this can easily cause damage. An air blower, such as the Soft Tip Silicone Super Air Blower ($7.99, Amazon), is a far safer option. After using one of the above methods, this can be used to blow out any excess dust.

1. Hold your air blower a short distance away from the speakers and remove dust and debris in short bursts. It won't be as powerful as compressed air, but that's okay.

2. Bring your air blower closer if necessary for greater effect.

3. Check the progress with your flashlight and repeat if necessary.

Note: if the sound quality on your iPhone remains distorted, you may have a problem with the software rather than blocked speakers. To resolve this, try turning it off and on again. If the problem persists, you may be forced to take it in for repairs.
