Meta owned is actively developing its WhatsApp app and working on new features. The latest beta version of the app on iOS suggests that a new feature may be coming soon. WABetaInfo - famous for its leaks on WhatsApp - shared a while back that the company is working on iMessage like message responses. In their latest findings, they have found that a relevant setting has appeared in the latest beta builds on iOS.

WABetaInfo has shared that version 22.2.72 of WhatsApp on iOS introduces a new reaction notification toggle in the app's settings. With this toggle visible to beta users, the feature may be coming to the platform relatively soon. Alternatively, the company may have accidentally exposed this setting and may remove it in a future beta build if the Feedback feature isn't ready yet.
Back in 2020, Mark Zuckerberg shared that Meta (Facebook at the time) is planning to merge the messaging systems of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. He mentioned that the plans will not come into force before 2022. WhatsApp is potentially adding message reactions soon, bridging the gap between it and Facebook/Instagram Direct Messages (DMs).
The merger between Facebook and Instagram DMs has already happened, as both platforms support (for the most part) the same messaging features. WhatsApp is still miles away from becoming similar to either of these two services. It remains to be seen whether the three will merge this year. It is also possible that monopolistic reasons will deter the company from proceeding with this potential move.
