ARM chip designs have changed the world by propelling the smartphone segment forward. Indeed, the computer scene is beginning to see the first ARM based computers, which are quite promising. Apple, for example, has completely replaced the company Intel x86 computers with its Apple M1 series. Because of the importance of ARM in the current industry, many people were waiting to see if Nvidia intention to acquire the UK-based chip designer would be successful. If this is the case, the company behind the Tegra series and some of the most powerful graphics cards in the world will also become one of the most powerful forces in the chip segment. However, it appears that Nvidia is giving up the deal.
Since 2020, the company has been attempting to acquire ARM. However, the transaction has sparked widespread concern in the industry, and it would also require regulatory approval. It is no longer necessary because the company has withdrawn from the negotiating table. According to Bloomberg, Nvidia has informed its partners that it does not expect the deal to close, while ARM current owner SoftBank is ramping up preparations for the company initial public offering (IPO).
Many companies are concerned with Nvidia and ARM deal
Among the "Concerned parties" in the deal were Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Google. These companies claimed that Nvidia acquisition of ARM would give the graphics card maker an unfair competitive advantage. Again, ARM chip designs are currently used by a slew of competitors. Nvidia, on the other hand, had promised to keep the current business model after the acquisition. Nonetheless, antitrust regulators in the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and China have launched antitrust investigations and are working to stop the deal.
Apparently, Nvidia is just "moving on" to halt its efforts at the deal. It looks like these regulators will reach their target and stop the deal. Hence the company will save time and money from unsuccessful attempts.
Despite these reports, some Nvidia representatives are still hopeful of a successful deal. For now, there are conflicting reports and we need to wait for an official clarification, or better, wait to see if the deal will be confirmed. For now, neither ARM nor SoftBank have commented on the new report.
ARM has ushered in another significant era in the mobile segment with its ARMv9 architecture. The company should still be a significant part of this industry for years to come.
