CES 2022: Lenovo new Smart Clock ditches Google Assistant for Amazon Alexa

Lenovo new Smart Clock ditches Google Assistant for Amazon Alexa

Lenovo did quite well at CES 2022. Not only did it unveil a range of new laptops, the company also showed off its new smart watch. While the design and display of the new Lenovo Smart Clock cum display cum speaker is similar, it eschews Google Assistant in favor of Amazon Alexa. That's why it's called Lenovo Smart Clock Essentials with Alexa Built-in.

Bedside gadgets have made our lives easier as they not only act as alarm clocks but also act as our personal assistants who answer questions and play music. That's because of the digital voice assistant that powers them. While there are a handful of voice assistants out there right now, the most popular are Google Assistant and Alexa. The latter is clearly considered the better when it comes to speakers, and that's probably why Lenovo has adopted it.

Alexa will require an Amazon account to work, unlike Google Assistant, which uses a Google account that almost everyone has. You may need to create an Amazon account for Lenovo Smart Clock Essentials to work with Alexa built-in. Like an Echo speaker, everything will be available on this version of the Lenovo Smart Clock Essentials. You can set alarms, play music from Amazon Music and other supported music services, as well as control smart home devices with this smart watch.

In terms of specifications, the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential with Alexa built-in has a bigger display than the Google Assistant counterpart. The fabric case is a bit more pronounced and now comes in blue and red colours. The LED display on the front is slanted. The 3W speaker inside will be loud enough to sit next to your bed, or in a small room, but don't expect much from it. On top of the device are physical buttons for volume up/down, alarm clock, and Alexa, while on the back, you have a microphone toggle for better privacy. Next to this toggle is the power input.

And if you still think the Lenovo Smart Clock looks boring with built-in Essential Alexa, Lenovo is selling an Ambient Light dock that looks like a cloud. This dock glows when you attach the watch to it and has eight colors to lighten your mood. You can either tap the top of the watch to change this color or ask Alexa to do the same. The Smart Clock Essential also supports the Smart Clock 2's wireless charging dock, which allows you to charge the phone by placing it next to the watch.

The Lenovo Smart Clock Essential with Alexa built-in is priced at $59.99 (roughly Rs. 4,460) and will be available in the US starting this month. The Ambient Lite Dock will sell separately in the US in the first quarter of 2022 for $29.99 (approximately Rs 2,230). There is no information about the launch in India yet.
