According to a recent report, Samsung is preparing itself for a future where its smartphones will no longer run on Android OS. Instead, it will run a new operating system that has been developed in Google laboratories for a few years. If you've been following, you probably know yes, we're talking about fuchsia. Earlier this year it was revealed that Samsung contributed to the development of Fuchsia. Now, a new report suggests that Samsung may go a few steps ahead and decide to leave Android behind. The company is working to make Fuchsia its option on Android, but it may still be a few years away. (via @dohyun854).
As the folks at Sammobile pointed out, it won't last from one night to a new day. Sources say that it will take a few years for Samsung to adopt this new open-source OS from Google. It will probably match with other companies as well. In the past, reports have suggested that Fuchsia was announced as an alternative to Google for Android. For now, it's too early to say whether Fuchsia OS will come with Samsung One UI or any other proprietary skin. The open source nature of the OS means that the Korean firm can easily implement its own skin and features on Fuchsia.
Samsung won't be the only company to switch to Fuchsia
This change is not mere coincidence. As mentioned earlier, this is all a part of Google master plan to switch to the new platform. Unlike the Android OS, Fuchsia will not use Linux kernel code but a new code called Zircon. The search giant is developing Fuchsia to run on a variety of smart products, from wearables to smartphones, tablets, computers and IoT. It was already used as a pilot run for the Nest Hub.
So, as mentioned above, Samsung might not be the only company to drop Android. If Google makes Fuchsia a viable option on Android, it will put it at the forefront of its Pixel smartphones, which will ship with the new OS. As a result, we may see other companies jumping in the boat. Like Thanos, it will be imperative to move towards what Google offers.
Once Samsung already has some knowledge of the development of Fuchsia, the company could have a definite advantage over its competitors. The Korean firm will be getting familiar with the new OS soon, and this early debut could be the key for the company to maintain leadership in a new era without Android.
It's interesting to see that Samsung is still going for Google instead of trying to build its own operating system from scratch. Recently, the company tried to develop Tizen OS for its smartphones, but it proved unsuccessful. In fact, companies that attempted to ship their own OS didn't have much success.
