India First Rural 5G Trials Begins in Gujarat

The first rural 5G trials in India have been carried out in collaboration with the country private telecom operators and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The 5G rural market trial was held in Ajol village in Gujarat Gandhinagar district. A base transceiver station (BTS) was installed in Unava, a nearby town 17 kilometres from Ajol in the Gandhinagar district, to conduct the trial.

Members of the country two private telecom operators, as well as DoT officials, were present throughout the first rural 5G trials. According to a report in The Times of India, the initial rural 5G trials could achieve download speeds of 105.47 Mbps and upload speeds of 58.77 Mbps.

As per reports, rural 5G trials also tested several consumer-end services as part of the process. These included live streaming of classroom sessions in 360-degree virtual reality. An immersive gaming project, where gamers movements were captured online and streamed to the gaming platform, merged with pre-recorded game videos, was also tested. A third project tested involves real-time live streams from 360-degree cameras over a 5G network, which can be experienced by users to feel included in space – and which includes detecting elements such as persons and objects.

5G trials are already underway in India, with telecom operators collaborating with a number of industry players to test network speeds and applications in various parts of the country. Reliance Jio, an Indian operator, has already announced its own 5G technology stack. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are also conducting their own trials, and each of India's three major operators has stressed the importance of rolling out 5G services to consumers on a regular basis.
