Following the recent food poisoning fiasco that made international headlines, Apple has placed Foxconn Chennai (India) on its "Compliance Watch list." For those who are unfamiliar, Foxconn is a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer and Apple's largest iPhone assembler.
A recent Reuters report on December 30 shows that 250 female workers who suffered food poisoning in the incident lived in overcrowded hostels, did not have flush toilets, and sometimes had insects crawling into the food.
However, this was a common occurrence for many years, as interviewed by six female workers. Things became dire when 250 workers were affected by these working conditions, which led to an irresistible protest, which led to the closure of the factory for improvement.
The workers also revealed that they sleep on the floor of the room, which can accommodate 6 to 30 people. Laws governing women's housing in Tamil Nadu, India require that each person have at least 11 square meters of living space and that the housing complies with sanitation and fire safety standards set by the local government.
The protests come at a time when Apple is looking to expand production of its iPhone 13 in India as it seeks to reduce its dependence on China amid rising tensions between US and China trade ties and shareholders. The company has been urged to increase its transparency. Supplier.
As for the factory closures, an Apple spokesperson said that "before the factory reopens, Apple will ensure it meets strict standards." The spokesperson, however, did not disclose the details of the reforms that needed to be made or the parameters that needed to be met.
Foxconn, on the other hand, is restructuring its local management team and taking immediate steps to improve its employees' living conditions. The company also stated that all employees would continue to be paid until the factory reopened and necessary improvements were made.
