While MediaTek and Qualcomm have long been known rivals in the smartphone chipset market, the latter has always been the market leader. However, MediaTek has now surpassed Qualcomm to become the largest smartphone SoC manufacturer this year.
"We are now the largest smartphone SoC maker globally," said Taiwanese chipmaker CEO Rick Tsai. We continue to expand our market share in all regions of the world." This was stated by a senior official at a recent investor conference in Taiwan. The company appears to have experienced rapid growth, allowing it to diversify beyond its previous reliance on Chinese customers. According to the CEO, the brand Android smartphone market share in North America alone will surpass 25% this year.

For those who are unaware, MediaTek sells chips to almost every smartphone OEM in the world, with its Dimensity lineup of 5G processors even available in the flagship segment. According to EETimesAsia, the company's growth can be attributed to its strong performance in the 5G segment, which allowed it to become the market leader rather than a "fast follower in the phone business."
The smartphone SoC accounted for 56% of its revenue in the third quarter of 2021. This was a significant 72 percent increase over the same period last year, with the strong increase attributed to the growth of 5G and its market share gains. Tsai also believes that MediaTek can expand further in the 5G segment thanks to its proprietary design architecture, low power design expertise, and TSMC 4nm process technology.
