Apple is rumoured to upgrade the iPhone optical zoom capabilities by adding a long-awaited periscope camera lens. It is rumoured to be an exclusive feature of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, thus it can take some time before it becomes available.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a consistently dependable analyst, predicts that the Pro Max variant of the 2023 iPhone lineup will feature a periscope lens. The key features of this camera will be a 1/3-inch image sensor with a 12-megapixel resolution, an f/2.8 aperture, sensor-shift capability, and an optical zoom of up to 6x.
This will be a massive improvement over the telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which only has a 3x optical zoom and a meagre 15x digital zoom. However, if the enhanced 6x zoom capabilities are to be trusted, it still won't be able to compete with the 10x optical zoom of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Even so, Apple might eventually match the capabilities of Samsung Galaxy cameras.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models are expected to have comparable features, even if the iPhone 15 Pro Max might be the only one having a periscope lens. There's no news on whether the basic versions will receive significant camera upgrades, so it's obvious that this will be a defining feature for subsequent Pro models.
According to earlier reports, the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to feature a 48MP main camera sensor, a significant improvement above the 12MP of the iPhone 13 Pro.
Since you can only go so far with software advancements before you need to update the hardware, this may result in a 35 percent increase in sensor size and a 10 percent increase in lens diameter.
Will the price of Apple lineup of iPhone Pro models rise more as a result of these expected upgrades? Maybe, but we won't know for sure if a periscope lens ends up on the iPhone until it happens. Check out what we know about the impending iPhone 14 in the meanwhile.
