Netflix prices increasing in the United States and Canada in Jan 2022

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services in the world, and as the company finances more and more original content, the monthly bill for subscribers has gradually increased. Unfortunately, Netflix announced on Friday that prices will go up once again, at least for subscribers in the United States and Canada.

In the United States, the Netflix Standard plan will increase from $13.99/month to $15.49/month, while in Canada, the same plan will increase from $14.99/month to $16.4/month (via Reuters). The Premium plan, which doubles the number of concurrent streams to four and adds 4K playback, has increased from $17.99/month to $19.99/month in the US, and from $18.99/mo to $20.99/mo in Canada.

Netflix most recent price rise was in October 2020, when the Standard plan increased from $13/mo to $14/mo and the Premium plan increased from $16/mo to $18/mo. The price of the Basic tier, which allows you to stream on one device at a time and in 720p quality, has not changed.

"We understand people have more entertainment choices than ever", a Netflix spokesperson told Reuters in a statement. We're committed to delivering an even better experience for our members. We're changing our prices so we can keep providing a diverse range of high-quality entertainment alternatives. We continue to offer a variety of programmes so that members can choose a price that fits their budget.

Netflix is up against more competition than ever before, and most of its competitors are now cheaper. Hulu costs $12.99/month with no commercials (or $6.99/month with ad breaks) in the United States, Disney+ costs $7.99/month or $79.99/year in the United States, and HBO Max costs $14.99/month in the United States. YouTube Premium is $11.99/month and includes access to Google's music streaming network, YouTube Music, albeit it isn't precisely a Netflix competitor.
